“I’ve never quit anything, so why start now?”
– Shykem Lawrence, 18, Camden, New Jersey

As the Courier-Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer and 6abc.com have reported…
ShykemGrowing up in Camden, New Jersey with his mother and five siblings, Shykem Lawrence played football ever since he can remember. But in August during a scrimmage, the 18-year old high school senior suffered a spinal-cord injury when he clashed helmets with another player in a tackle, and was left paralyzed. For the past few months, he has been at Philadelphia’s Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, where he is being weaned off a ventilator, and learning to control a motorized wheelchair with a straw. For a while, Shykem felt so depressed, he didn’t even want to open the shades in his room. He changed his outlook when he realized “others are in a worse position than me, ” he says. “I have a lot of support.” Teammates and family visit him regularly, and keep his spirits up. “I tell him miracles happen every day. And with his positive attitude, positive things will happen, ” says Shykem’s mother, Alvinita. Soon, he’ll return home, where he’s ready to keep fighting. “It’s like a football field, ” Shykem says. “You just have to work hard, and strive to be the best.”

The Goal: $75, 000 for a caregiver and a van with a lift
